They’re glued to the TV…

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”center” font_size=”17″ font_color=”%23707070″ width=”850″]The kids have been sitting there all day.  You only know they are still alive by the constant need for snacks.  Your sanity (and their brain cells) die a little with each song from that annoying new show.

You know they need to get out of the house but you are just out of ideas so they continue the multi-hour marathon of zombie time.  The summer struggle is real!

We’re Just Like You

Parents looking for a little more from our kids’ summer than sitting on the couch or hiding in the pool.

Juggling the competing desires to let-them-be-free-because-that’s-what-kids-do with it-would-be-nice-if-they-learned-something-this-summer.

Being busy, tired, or both so that we just want an activity that’s ready to go.[/text_block]

Honeybee Training lesson  –  “I’m not sure how much my 4 year-old learned but he had fun collecting and transferring the “nectar” and running from predators. My 7 year old understood the process from collection to honey. Overall, it was fun, engaging, and educational.

Just started on the science lessons.  They are SO detailed and really fun, and they teach a lot in the lesson at the same time. It’s like a little day at school. It was more than I expected and I was totally impressed with them.

They look like they can be really adaptable to big kids and little kids as well. I was really impressed and pleasantly surprised.

Only have 15 minutes?

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”center” bottom_padding=”30″]Today you only have 15 minutes.  Next week you want to keep them busy for days.  Our flexible lessons give you both.

A marker in the lesson plan shows you the best place to cut the lesson if you only have 15 minutes.  All lessons and activities list the estimated time required right up front so you don’t have to guess if you have enough time.

We also included an “Extending the Lesson” section in each lesson giving you websites, videos, and books to explore even more![/text_block]

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left” width=”460″]

Yup, there are free science activities out there.

The interwebs are stuffed with activities and lessons.  But that creates the problem of sifting through all that “stuff”.

Backyard Summer Science has completed lessons & activities, science explanations, and support from us all in one place!  No more cobbling together your own summer program.

Why take lessons outside?

Everything is better outside!  Outdoors bring kids more exercise, better focus (even with ADHD), less stress, Vitamin D

Plus, they aren’t making a mess of the house.  So win-win there.

We’re flexible

These lessons are created for the busy parent.  Need a quick 15 minute lesson?  We got ya!  What to stretch the lesson out into a multi-day learning fest?  We have website, video, and book suggestions to learn a little more.  Got preschoolers?  We’ve got a few suggestions for that too.  Fit the lessons to you and your schedule.

What kind of science lessons are they?

A little bit of everything!  Biology, physics, geology… we’ve got it all!

The class starts out with 5 lessons available and we will add more though June & July.[/text_block]

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left” width=”460″]

Think your kids don’t like science?

We’ve been into the classrooms and seen those science hating kiddos.  And why wouldn’t they?  Stuck in chair doing a worksheet on some concept they can’t even grasp.

Doing is learning!  Kids love these science lessons because they are hands-on and not some boring lecture.

I don’t know anything about science.

You don’t need a degree in science to spark an interest in you kids.  But to make science even easier for everyone, we included science explanations in each lessons.  Basic language that tells you the why and how of what’s happening.  Plus, we will be here to help if you have any questions.

See the science process in action

“Citizen science” is just everyday people contributing to real science projects.  This gives kids the chance to be a part of something bigger and connect with other kids who are too.

This optional group project on iNaturalist (app or desktop) helps you submit photos of wild plants, animals, or bugs you find.  You don’t even have to know what they are, just how to take a picture of them![/text_block]

You don’t need to be a technical genius to use the program

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”center” bottom_padding=”30″]All this glorious content is no help at all if the website looks like a maze the Minotaur would be proud of.  Well, we won’t leave you hangin’!
