Plant Babies – Game

Being a plant is tough!  You can’t run from predators, you can’t walk around to find food, and it’s hard to kick the children out of the house when they grow older. ?

WHY?

Because they are stuck in place!

Just like animals, plants need food, need to reproduce, and need to stay off the menu.  So how do that do it?

How to kick the kids out of the house

Why do plants need to kick out their little plant babies?

Because as we have said already, plants don’t move.  There is limited food, water, and space near a plant so they send their plant babies (seeds) away from them so they can all have enough resources to live on.

How can plants send out their seeds when they can’t move?  Well, they actually  have quite a few different ways to do it.

Plant Babies Tic-tac-toe GAME

Let explore all the ways plants move (disperse) their seeds with a little game!

  • Print out 1 tic-tac-toe card for every 2 kids
  • Take turns choosing a plant or tree and looking at their seeds.
  • Look at the seeds for clues about how it could move (disperse): size, shape, weight, texture, etc.
  • Draw or glue the sample in the correct space. Also, make an “X” or “O” in the box so you know which partner found it.
  • DO NOT fill the “choose any” space until you find a seed type that has already been filled.
  • Play until someone gets 3 in a row or the board is filled.

But we haven’t talked about dispersal methods yet!!

seed dispersal

Well, that is on purpose.  Let the kids explore for themselves and consult with each other and you about what each seed method might be.  If you need a little help, you can refer to our dispersal examples.  But let the kids try it themselves!
